Hello, my name is Adam Burrell I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Boulder Colorado. I specialize in working with twice-exceptional (2e) teens, young adults, and their parents. I understand that even when you are intellectually gifted, you may still struggle academically, professionally, socially, or emotionally. Those struggles can be exhausting. You may feel overwhelmed, angry, irritable, confused, isolated, or scared. You may be coping with anxiety, depression, self-harm, or thoughts of suicide. Even when others recognize your intelligence, you may still feel misunderstood, unsupported, or worn down by the constant effort it takes to navigate daily life with learning differences or a neurodevelopmental condition such as dyslexia, ADHD, or ASD.
You may be enrolled in gifted classes while also relying on supports such as a 504 Plan or IEP. Perhaps you have tried therapy before and regularly use DBT or CBT skills, yet despite these supports, you still feel exhausted from masking, overcompensating, or trying to meet expectations that were never designed for the way your mind works. No matter how hard you try, you may still feel as though you are falling short of your own expectations or the expectations others have placed on you.
I work with twice-exceptional individuals to help them better understand both their unique strengths and the challenges they face. Many 2e individuals recognize that they experience, interpret, and process the world differently because of the complex combination of high intelligence and one or more learning differences or neurodevelopmental conditions. While this can create significant challenges in daily life, it is also often a source of creativity, insight, depth, originality, and intense curiosity. These qualities are not flaws to eliminate, they are meaningful parts of who you are.
My goal is not simply to change behaviors or help you conform to outside expectations. Instead, I help clients develop greater self-awareness, understanding, and acceptance. Through this process, you can learn to navigate academic, professional, social, and emotional challenges more effectively while recognizing that your unique way of seeing and engaging with the world is not something to hide, fear, or view as the source of shame, anxiety, or depression, but rather an invaluable strength to be understood, supported, and celebrated.
If you are a parent, you may feel like things are spiraling out of control. You may desperately want to help your child while feeling emotionally exhausted and unsure what to try next. Well-meaning friends, family members, teachers, or professionals may offer advice, but much of it may fail to capture the complexity of your child’s experience. I work with parents to help them better understand their twice-exceptional child, strengthen connection and communication, and develop supportive strategies that honor both your child’s challenges and their exceptional strengths.
I also work in public schools as a mental health support professional and have supported numerous students over the years as they navigate a wide range of personal and academic challenges. Working within the school system has given me a unique perspective and deep appreciation for the difficulties students face daily. It has also provided me with an in the moment understanding of what social and emotional distress looks and feels like as students experience it in real time within the school environment.
Everyone seeks support at some point in life, regardless of the nature of their challenges. Reaching out for support is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of strength. Trust yourself to know when you need help and don't hesitate to ask for it.
